The big frost came, so now I am going to need to pick the apples and deal with the fully-loaded Harrelson Red tree.
Big winds also came on Friday, so I probably do not have as many apples to deal with as I did on Thursday, but there are still bushels of apples to pick!
Any volunteers that wish to come pick and take apples for themselves are always welcome to visit, but I suspect half the town is covered with these Harrelson Red apple trees. One neighbor said she was having her tree cut down, because she does not need all those apples - they **are** more of a tart pie apple than an eating apple, unlike the Honeycrisp Gold, which is more of a sweet eating apple. So they Harrelson Reds are great for baking and wonderful for jelly, but not as good for eating out of hand. They are not bad for eating, but there are just not as many fans for the "tarter apples" as there are for the sweeter apples.
Before I can start on those, however, I need to mess with the rest of the Honeycrisp Gold apples that I keep moving from place to place. With my kitchen in full project mode, I do not have any good place to "keep" them at the moment...
So I will pick out a bowl of "perfect eating apples" for the counter, and make apple juice today with the rest. That will put an end to the musical chairs game I have been playing with my brown-paper-grocery-sack full of apples.
